This is all so very inspiring to read. I have not had the opportunity to visit Haiti, but last year my daughter, at the age of 14, got the chance to go to Cambodia and work in an orphanage for 2 weeks and experience many of the same wonderful experiences you have described above. The people (kids) there are so strong and never complain about anything. Food is scarce, lice is rampant, most of them either don't have parents due to the Khmer Rouge or their parents are very ill and living on the streets. Despite all of the despair, they smile and are cheerful each day! During my daughters stay, there was a wonderful 15 year old girl who was obviously very ill. She never complained one day, did her chores, took care of the younger kids, but at the end of the day would lie in bed with tears rolling down her face in pain. For $11, the group that my daughter was with took her to the "good" hospital instead of the local hospital that she had been to so many times before. Each time she went to the hospital they said she was fine. Come to find out she had TB. For $35 she was able to get the 6 shots she needed to help her deal with her TB. It is unbelievable that for $46 she could be helped, but if the group did not take her to the hospital, she would probably not be here today. My daughter learned so much from all of these strong individuals. We are desperately trying to get back to the orphanage this summer as we have stayed in touch with them and there are some horrible things happening there. Many of the kids are back on the street and the orphanage is falling apart. We are hoping to raise enough money to go back and help the orphanage get back on it's feet and start to educate young women about how to care for their babies. This is a great need and we have made some connections with some wonderful people who are asking for help in developing more organized orphanages and educating the young about care for themselves and their families. If anyone has any wonderful fundraising ideas to help us get back to spread our love and support I would love some ideas! Just like in Haiti, these people are working hard to try and make their world the best they can. We would love to help in any way.
