Corona Light Commercial
Hello Michael,
I love your music and recently saw your show in Eugene. I have especially appreciated your Earthdance shows in the past. You always bring the Love vibe up to that next level at Earthdance. I respect the content and the energy of your music. And your We Are Not Alone movie/DVD is amazing. Kudos to you for standing up against the mainstream, "the man", and helping spread the words of love and freedom. But I have a question for you. I was recently watching one of the only shows that I watch on T.V. (The Daily Show) and a Corona Light beer commercial came on and it was you singing in the background on this commercial (one of your recent songs). At first I couldn't believe it! Many of your songs talk about turning off the T.V. ("let go of remote control") and are also against corporate dominance and rampant commercialization of our world and minds. So to hear you singing in the background of a major corporation's beer commercial with the intent to sell alcohol to the masses by glorifying alcohol and making it seem like the hip, loving, fun thing to do, well, I was extremely disappointed. It made me feel a little bit like when I saw a Pepsi commercial during a recent Super Bowl with Bob Dylan singing. But this isn't the height of Bob Dylan's influence any more (it's not the 60s) and, thus, seeing a Corona Light commercial with your song (arguably at the height of your influence to-date) was even more difficult to stomach than Dylan's Pepsi commercial. It is hard for me to reconcile your words and vibe with seeing the recent Corona Light commercial. I would love to hear your thoughts on this matter.
Peace,
Adam

Sheesh,"rude slang"? I
Sheesh,"rude slang"? I thought I was just poking fun using a little gentle humor (sarcastic song lyrics, etc.) to raise an issue of concern to the community...
Honestly, I'm just really curious to hear what Michael has to say about this. I've met him too, and I know he cares about his community and does not just see his fans as consumers...
I'll shut up now, and just feel slightly disillusioned, or at least have a question mark about this until Michael is asked about it in an interview and talks about it publicly, which surely will happen.

I understand your concerns, I
I understand your concerns, I just think your approach to expressing your concerns is sad. There must be another way. I've meet Michael more than a few times, and being the soft spoken man that he is, I am sure there must be another way to express your concerns rather than littering all the sites with rude slang.
Why don't you add me on Facebook... I'm open to new friends and could always enjoy a good chat or two, every so often.
Being that it's pretty pointless to argue over things, and being that life is way toooo short as it is...

Note - the only reason I'm
Note - the only reason I'm raggin' on Michael for the beer commercial is that he is one of my heros and I'm just a little shocked by it. I've followed him since before he founded Spearhead and bought every record and been to shows on every Spearhead tour. I've got pictures of myself with MF proudly displayed on my facebook page. I don't think he's just another musician. In addition to producing some of the most funky, danceable, joyous music there is, he has a message and a philosophy of community, love, tolerance and acceptance. He is overtly political on some issues. He talks about "how do we hold on to our spirituality, our community and our connectedness to each other." He is a peace activist. So, shilling for a company that is distributed by Coors Brewery, one of the most right wing, repressive companies in America, just seems somewhat inconsistent. I'm hoping to provoke some explanation like "I was using this as a way to fund orphanages in Malawi even while I promote legal corporate drug pushers..."

'Oh c'mon! Lighten
'Oh c'mon! Lighten up....
(This is aimed at the guy who is posting "Beerhead" all over all the sites)
While the commercial is promoting its product.... in this case, a beer.. It shouldn't really matter. The people in the video are obliteratively having a good time, and not only that but there is sunshine and happiness all around. So, your next comment is going to be, "well, promoting the beer is the reason for the good time." Once again, LIGHTEN UP!
I don't drink, maybe once or twice a year. But was not at all bothered by this commercial. How many people do you think are actually going to watch it, and be like "Oh man, we need to drink a Corona Light, now!!! Cause Michael Franti's music says so!" What the heck people, chill pill....seriously.
Peace n' love, peace n' love......
This isn't some huge corp corruption or something.
There truly are bigger problems in this here world we live in.
And remember,
It's Spearhead.....

I think lending a song to
I think lending a song to Corona is complete junk. Nothing less than a sell out on behalf of Michael and Spearhead. I'm really disappointed. Corona in the U.S. is distributed by COORS... a company with a long and troubling history with regards to its' stand on social justice issues. I wouldn't have problem with Spearhead advertising for beer if they had chosen a socially conscious company like Sierra Nevada Brewing, but COORS???????? Are we going to have Corona pushed on us at shows now? Regardless of the fact that Corona would be one of the last beers I would ever reach for, Spearhead is delving into an area that is completely contrary to the message they are supposedly trying to spread. COORS/Corona??????? Boooo-Hisss. Come on Michael...bring it back home.

Gee Whiz! Hearing a great
Gee Whiz! Hearing a great song on a TV commercial! Get a life everyone. TV and commercials and beer are a core element in our lives. Don't like beer; don't drink it! Love beer; drink it in moderation. Don't like TV; turn it off. Don't like big corporations; do something constructive like vote for people who care about the rest of us. (And I assume that you have studied all the lyrics in all of Michael's songs and agree 100% with every line.)
It is terrific to see Michael and Spearhead finally getting some of the exposure they deserve and have worked so hard for. Given that we are fans - good friends and supporters of Michael - and truly get his primary message of love and peace then maybe we should focus on that on not on some other personal agenda we might have.
