"We know what we are, but not what we may be." -William Shakespeare------------- I grew up in a small town from when I was six months old up until 3 years ago. In that town was a bridge, the highest in the US, and people would come to jump off of it and end their lives. I saw a man I didn't know do exactly that. In the years following that experience, I moved out on my own, and went through my own struggles with feeling suicidal and self mutilation. Now, I am working on a project that will cover the sidewalks of that bridge in a mural for suicide prevention and awareness. I think it is a shame to lose our fellow human beings because they feel as if no one cares, and no one understands their pain. We have to learn to be mindful, present, compassionate, and open with each other. There is a lot of sadness in this world and I think what makes it so hard on people is that we don't communicate, we are afraid. Instead of being present, we hide from each other and we don't allow ourselves to feel. We tie our feelings to thoughts and the sadness takes over our lives rather than just becoming a natural part of life as it should be.
